The following report from David Layton and Paloma Beamer, professors of environmental policy at the University of Arizona, shows the importance of cleaning your carpet, upholstery and other flooring for health reasons. Eco Clean of Knoxville has speciality cleaning processes to help improve indoor air quality and health.

As a general rule, the majority of household dust — about 60% — comes from outside, through windows, doors, vents and, significantly, on the soles of your shoes. Smaller dust particles — from 28 to 49 microns, or thousandths of a millimeter — tend to stay on your shoes. The rest is shaken off inside. A higher share of the dust that floats in the air gets deposited, but again, there’s a lot that determines how much any one home will get.

“Here in Arizona,” says Beamer, “where we leave our windows open most of the year and have an arid climate, we would probably have a higher ratio.” Industrial centers or sooty cities have plenty of dust too, though for different reasons.

There’s not much to fret about in simple particles of dirt or organic materials such as pollen (though they can trigger allergies), but lead, arsenic and DDT can be a more serious matter. About one-third of the arsenic in the atmosphere comes from natural sources — volcanoes principally. The rest comes from mining, smelting, burning fossil fuels and other industrial processes. Even in relatively low concentrations, arsenic is not without risk, especially to small children who play on the floor and routinely transfer things from their hands to their mouths. The same is true for lead, which comes less from wall paint — the source most people would expect — than from auto exhaust, smelting and soil deposits. “Lead loading on floors is a key determinant of blood-lead levels in children,” Layton and Beamer wrote in their paper.

Let Eco Clean Carpet Solutions help lessen the toxins in your home & business.

Also, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, 50% of all illnesses are caused or aggravated by polluted indoor air.

Over 40 million Americans suffer from allergies due to home bio-pollution. If you or your child has allergies or asthma, you already know that many things can bring on, or “trigger and asthma flare or episode. Some things that trigger asthma attacks are called allergens. Some people get symptoms from only one allergen-like dust mites. For other people, more than one kind of allergen can trigger an episode.

Report 101: Indoor Health Threats-Causes & Controls

Carpet is an important health function in preventing the spread of contaminants throughout your home. Of course, it restricts by collecting pollutants, just as your air conditioning filter. And, just as your air conditioning filter should be changed monthly, carpeting should be cleaned at regular intervals for health reasons-especially in high traffic areas.

Unfortunately, many people view carpet cleaning as a nicety, not a necessity. Even more unfortunate, children, having under-developed immune systems, are the first to suffer the consequences. They live closer to the floor. Still, continuous exposure to contaminants, day after day, wears down the resistance of all, regardless of age.

Consider that we spend 85% to 90% of our time indoors. Day after day, we are continually exposed to many organic, inorganic, and biological pollutants that steadily increase in quantity when we don’t keep our indoor surfaces clean. Regular periodic maintenance is necessary.

Dr. Michael Berry, a deputy director in the EP A, commented at a Denver symposium that the average family spends less than ½ of 1 % of their income on cleaning. This fact certainly explains why more and more people are getting sick, . . . why health care is a multibillion dollar industry, doesn’t it? Surly, the preservation of a healthy home environment is worth more than that.

Never forget that I’m here to serve you. My customers often call just for advice on removing spots, and I don’t mind a bit. Call when I can help in any way.

Are you about to have a nervous breakdown because your three year old decided to express her artistic abilities all over the living room carpet? Try these simple steps first before resulting to pharmaceuticals.

Ink removal can be one of the trickiest things to remove from your carpet and upholstery. A spot the size of the head of a pin can grow to the size of a softball if you aren’t careful. Don’t attempt this if there is a lot of ink on your upholstery or carpet. It may call for a professional with some experience in the matter. Make sure that if you do call a professional that he is IICRC certified. Eco Clean Carpet Solutions of Knoxville is an IICRC certified firm. An amateur could make things worse for you. If you are going to attempt this yourself, make sure that you test any products that you use on an inconspicuous area first. You don’t want to end up with a bleached spot in the middle of you living room.

      1) Use a dropper to drip a barrier of hydrogen peroxide around the ink spot. This will keep the ink contained within the peroxide barrier so that it doesn’t get bigger.

     2) Put some ink remover (can get from janitorial supply store) or acetone (nail polish remover) on a white cotton towel.

     3) blot the spot with the acetone/ink remover from the outside of the spot while working you way to the middle until there is no more ink transfer to the towel. Be careful not to take color out of the fabric or carpet you are working on. If you do, you will be trading one problem for another.

     4) drip a little acetone/ink remover onto the spot and vacuume with a wet/dry vac. DO NOT saturate the spot with acetone/ink remover because it will delaminate the carpet.

     5) Stop when the spot does not transfer to the towel anymore or is completely gone.

     6) Rinse the spot well with a neutral pH spot remover. A few drops of Dawn dish detergent to a half cup of water will work fine. Don’t make it too soapy or the soap will attract soil. Rinse again with plain water until there is no more residue.

Here’s the basics on preventing freezing pipes:

Outside plumbing

Caulk around pipes where they enter the house. Close all foundation vents. (Open foundation vents are probably the greatest cause of frozen or split water lines.) Cut wood or styrofoam blocks to fit vent openings, then slide them into the vents. (Styrofoam is available at hardware stores or from insulation suppliers.) Open the vents again in the spring to prevent dry rot.

Protect outside pipes and faucets. In some homes, the outside faucet has a separate shut-off in the basement. If you have a separate valve for outside faucets, shut if off. Then go outside and turn on all the faucets to drain water in the lines. Leave the outside faucets on while you go back and check your outside shut-off valve for a small brass plug or cap on the valve. Turn this plug far enough that water drains from the valve. Then, tighten the plug back and turn off all the outside faucets.

Wrap outside faucets or hose bibs. Do this if you don’t have a separate valve to turn off outside faucets. (Also remember to disconnect garden hoses.) Use newspaper or rags covered with plastic, fiberglass or molded foam insulating covers to wrap the faucet. (Molded foam insulating covers are available at plumbing and hardware stores.)

Drain in-ground sprinkler systems. Check manufacturer’s instructions for the best way to do this.

Inside plumbing

Insulate pipes in unheated areas such as the crawl space, attic, garage or basement. Use insulating tape or molded pipe sleeve and wrap it over the entire length of exposed pipe. Cover all valves, pipe-fittings, etc. with insulating tape or fiberglass. (Check your hardware store for supplies.)

Shut off and drain your water system if you are leaving home for several days. (Turn off the water heater before draining the system.) Leaving your furnace on a low setting while you’re gone helps, but may not prevent freezing. Turn off the main shut-off valve, then go through the house and turn on all faucets, sinks, tubs, showers, etc., and flush the toilets. Go back to the valve and remove the plug so that it can drain completely. Follow-up by re-tightening the valve and turning off the open faucets.

Open cupboard doors in the kitchen and bathrooms. Water lines supplying the kitchen or bathrooms are frequently located in outside walls. Any air leaks in siding or insulation can cause these pipes to freeze. Leaving the cupboard doors open when the temperature is below freezing allows pipes behind the cupboards to get more heat.

Let the water run if the temperature dips below freezing. (A stream slightly smaller than a pencil width should be sufficient.) Faucets farthest from the street should be the ones left running. Using cold water will save on your gas or electric bill.

David Gargan

Make Your Own Eco Friendly Disinfectants at Home

If you are buying disinfectants from the store, you may be exposing yourself and your family to various harmful chemicals. The problem with these store bought disinfectants is that when you use them at home too much, they can make the bacteria resistant to those chemicals that you are using, which create super bacteria. Using heavy disinfectants can create super strains of bacteria like staph, which then become resistant to most antibiotics. The good news is that there are some greener alternatives that you can use in your home for disinfecting purposes.

Great Green Alternatives to Use

You can make your own eco friendly disinfectants in your home. It’s easy to make these disinfectants from home and it’s pretty cheap as well. One great option you have is to make a nice green disinfectant to use around your home by using water and a bit of eucalyptus oil. This oil can be purchased at health stores and other stores that sell herbal essential oils.

All you’ll need is a liter of water and 1.6 ounces of the eucalyptus oil. Shake this up well to make sure you have it well mixed together. Then once you have it all mixed up, you can use it just as you would a regular disinfectant that you purchased from the store. Going with this type of a disinfectant means you get a disinfectant that is greened, and you also will probably use the very same container again and again, which saves on the consumption of plastic as well.

The eucalyptus oil that you use is great oil. It is excellent for disinfecting purposes. Doctors in Europe have actually used this oil to sterilize and disinfect the equipment that they use. The only thing to be careful of is getting this oil on your skin. When you are putting it into the water, keep it off your skin when it is undiluted, since it is very strong and can really irritate your skin.

If you are not a big fan of the way that eucalyptus smells, there are some other options for making your own eco friendly disinfectant. Another option to consider is one made with grapefruit seed extract. You’ll need a spray bottle, a gallon of water that is warm, and then grapefruit seed extract. Put 20 drops of the extract into the bottle with the water and then mix it up very well.

There are other green agents that can be used for disinfecting purposes as well in your home. You can use vinegar. Just put in some essential oil to get rid of the vinegar smell. Hydrogen peroxide can be used as well. Even grain alcohol can be used, but you will need to put 30% water into it so it doesn’t evaporate away too fast. These are a variety of excellent options you can use at home so you don’t have to worry about the dangers of those disinfectants you can purchase at the store.

Swine Flu (H1 N1)

H1N1 (Swine flu) is a respiratory disease commonly found in pigs. For more than a century, this type of virus has been observed in both humans and swine. In 1918, a swine influenza outbreak called the Spanish flu affected people around the world and killed as many as 100 million people. This epidemic was caused by an exceptionally virulent strain of the Influenza “A” virus strain (H1 N1).

Swine flu is treatable, but then newest strain is not sensitive to some of the common antivirals that are available. Swine flu can be treated with Tamiflu and Relenza, available by prescription.

The symptoms of swine flu are mild. Although the symptoms for swine flu are similar to those of the regular flu, such as fever, chills, body aches and coughing, they are no worse than regular flu symptoms. However, there seems to be an increase in nausea and vomiting amongst those infected with swine flu. Again, these symptoms can be associated with regular strains of the flu as well.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists you can not catch swine flu from pork or other food products.

The strain of swine influenza “A” that is currently causing concern has the following characteristics:

It spreads easily between people.

People not normally considered “high risk” (young adults) are contracting this disease.

It has made a significant number of people sick in many countries around the world.

The flu vaccination that was made available this season does not protect against this strain.

What can I do about Swine Influenza “A” (H1N1)?

Promote good personal hygiene. Thorough hand washing and cleaning of public surfaces are the best ways to minimize exposure to harmful pathogens. Sporicidin® Disinfectant Solution is a liquid disinfectant that contains surfactants for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces in household and professional settings.

Use a safe product. Developed by the inventor of Chloraseptic® throat spray and utilizing exactly the same active ingredients, Sporicidin® Disinfectant Solution is one of the safest disinfectants available. For healthcare settings, infection control guidelines published by the CDC for Swine Influenza “A” (H1N1) state “disinfection strategies used during influenza seasons can be applied to the environmental management of swine influenza.” For home settings, the CDC recommends keeping “surfaces clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant according to directions on the product label.”
