Make Your Own Eco Friendly Disinfectants at Home

If you are buying disinfectants from the store, you may be exposing yourself and your family to various harmful chemicals.  The problem with these store bought disinfectants is that when you use them at home too much, they can make the bacteria resistant to those chemicals that you are using, which create super bacteria.  Using heavy disinfectants can create super strains of bacteria like staph, which then become resistant to most antibiotics.  The good news is that there are some greener alternatives that you can use in your home for disinfecting purposes.

Great Green Alternatives to Use

You can make your own eco friendly disinfectants in your home.  It’s easy to make these disinfectants from home and it’s pretty cheap as well.  One great option you have is to make a nice green disinfectant to use around your home by using water and a bit of eucalyptus oil.  This oil can be purchased at health stores and other stores that sell herbal essential oils.

All you’ll need is a liter of water and 1.6 ounces of the eucalyptus oil.  Shake this up well to make sure you have it well mixed together.  Then once you have it all mixed up, you can use it just as you would a regular disinfectant that you purchased from the store.  Going with this type of a disinfectant means you get a disinfectant that is greened, and you also will probably use the very same container again and again, which saves on the consumption of plastic as well.

The eucalyptus oil that you use is great oil.  It is excellent for disinfecting purposes.  Doctors in Europe have actually used this oil to sterilize and disinfect the equipment that they use.  The only thing to be careful of is getting this oil on your skin.  When you are putting it into the water, keep it off your skin when it is undiluted, since it is very strong and can really irritate your skin.

If you are not a big fan of the way that eucalyptus smells, there are some other options for making your own eco friendly disinfectant.  Another option to consider is one made with grapefruit seed extract.   You’ll need a spray bottle, a gallon of water that is warm, and then grapefruit seed extract.  Put 20 drops of the extract into the bottle with the water and then mix it up very well.

There are other green agents that can be used for disinfecting purposes as well in your home.  You can use vinegar.  Just put in some essential oil to get rid of the vinegar smell.  Hydrogen peroxide can be used as well.  Even grain alcohol can be used, but you will need to put 30% water into it so it doesn’t evaporate away too fast.  These are a variety of excellent options you can use at home so you don’t have to worry about the dangers of those disinfectants you can purchase at the store.
